Today's subject will be my very loud, and extremely warm running
IBM Deskstar 60GB Hard Drive that is currently pulling backup duty in
my primary machine.
To start off, simply turn the hard drive over and
stick the little thermal probe on the bottom of the drive with a piece
of electrical tape, making sure to cover the probe completely.
Flip the hard drive back over and sit it in the blue
vibration dampers. While holding it in place, simply screw it in
through the bottom using the included screws. The dampers not
only dramatically reduced the noise coming off the drive, but they
also serve to reduce shock coming in from the outside. When you
are moving your computer around, or lugging it around to LAN parties,
the hard drive will be protected from all of the minor shocks that it
would normally receive if it had been screwed directly into the case.
The Vortex will also work with any 3.5" hard drive,
including SCSI, SATA, and IDE models. The rear of the hard drive
can be easily accessed even after it has been installed, so you can
change jumpers or plug in cables without the trouble of taking the top
off again.
After the hard drive is secured, and you have replaced
the top, all you have to do is slide it into an empty 5.25" bay, plug
the molex connector in, and connect the IDE cable.
I did find one possible safety concern though.
You can open the front panel up while the machine is running, and the
fan keeps running.
As you can see, I can stick my finger through the bars
very easily. A little kid would probably find it fun to stick
small objects including their fingers inside. Granted, its
not powerful enough to do any serious damage, but it would be nice to
include some sort of grill that would resist this sort of behavior.
