We have gone and tested a few of
Samsung's quality optical drives as of late, so it does not
surprise us that they have released an update to their previous CD
re-rewriter. The previous drive was rated at 32X while the
newest addition to their line is the 40X which we will be taking a
look at today.

Just like it's younger brother, this 40X12X40 CD-RW
incorporates similar technology. To prevent buffer underuns a
hefty 8MB buffer is used by the drive. If that was not enough,
also include is the Super Link technology. When Super Link is
used, it monitors the buffers and slows/stops burning when incoming
data buffer is empty. It then resumes when the data catches up
later on. This helps in preventing burning 'coasters'.
The drive also incorporates DVA(Dynamic Vibration Absorber) which
helps dampen the noise level of the drive during operation.

The drive design is sleek with the
bevel shape of the cd tray. The large eject button lights up
faintly from the LED to its left while the drive is in use.
Audio and headphone adjustment is available on the front of the
drive. The rear of the unit has the standard audio, jumper,
IDE and power connects. The drive comes as master from the
factory, you may wish to change this according to your own system
configuration.

The manual is understandable with simple
diagrams that show what to do. EZ CD-Creator and Direct CD.
EZ CD Creator is the basic version, which is missing a few options for
audio and data creation like mixed mode and enhanced CDs. Direct
CD gives you the option of making your new 40X burner act like a
floppy. You can send files directly to it via drag and drop
operation.
