-- Testing and Conclusion
-- Page: 1 2

We ran a quick speed test to check if the drive is as fast as it states.  For this, we used  Nero CD Speed.

DAE Test - Click for larger picture

The average speed that the drive came up with was a bit lower than the stated speed.  But don't let this fool you, it is still burning in some parts at 32X, which is nothing to sneeze at.  DAE  (Digital Audio Extraction) test was also done on an audio cd, this yielded a perfect 10.

One thing to note, is that this drive is incredibly quiet.  If you have used older cdroms/burners, you know how ear splitting they can be.  The SW232 is quiet from the ejection of the tray to the read and writing of a cd.  This low noise is attributed to the use of DVA (Dynamic Vibration Absortion) technology.  The DVA reduces the vibration of the disk and the loading mechanism, thus reducing operating noise.

Let's get to the part you've all been waiting for, how fast can this drive burn.  I used a 658MB ISO image of FreeBSD 4.6 Disc 2 as a test subject.  The drive was hooked into a AMD 1.4Ghz  TB, Epox 8K7A with the supplied IDE cable.  Drive was checked to be running at DMA Mode 2  (16.6MB/sec).  The OS used was WinXP, burned with Nero 5.5 software.  I chose to use Nero since it was already on the machine.  Here are the results:

The write speed is not exactly 32X, but fast nonetheless.  Compared to most 32X drives on the market, the speeds are very similar.  Re-write speeds are about the same as previous tests.

Dependable writing and rewriting, coupled with sound absorption technology makes this drive another GT Preferred product from Samsung.  I'm not exaggerating when I say this drive can be bought for less than $70 USD right now, check out Pricewatch if you need some re-assurance.

Thanks to Samsung USA for sending us this sample, if you want a reliable and affordable drive, check this one out.  Its staying in my system until they release their next faster drive!

  Pros:
  • Fast
  • Super Link, helps prevent buffer under-runs
  • Extremely quiet!
  • Large eject button (personal fave)

  Cons:

  • Speeds are not exactly 32X, but this seems like the average on the market today
