Often times, the most important part of any
performance computer system is the display. The piece of
equipment that's always on when you need it and provides you
with data for your eyes. With the dropping prices of
conventional CRTs and flat screen LCDs, we have come a long way for
our viewing pleasure. Today we will be taking a look at a high
end LCD unit, the Syncmaster 171p, from the folks at
Samsung.
What do you think of when you hear the word Porsche?
Fast cars, exotic locations and computer monitors. That was
not a typo,
F.A. Porsche is the mastermind behind the design of this
beautiful monitor. Just like the 911 car models, Porsche
design spared nothing in putting together this model. Let's
take a look what we have in store.
The finish on the 171P is a smooth
light silver color with smoked buttons on the bottom.
This 17" model has a contrast ratio of 500:1, dual analog or digital
connectors, native resolution of 1280X1024 and a viewing angle of
170/170 degrees. The 171P also allows for pivoting which lets
you turn the screen 90 degrees in either direction. Here are some specs:

The packaging contains a 3-prong power
cord, power adapter, cdrom software and some instructions.
Following suit with most Samsung products we have reviewed, the
manual offers very little in explanation. More information can
be found within the cdrom if needed, otherwise the quick start guide
is the only paper instructions you will get.
The front panel power button and OSD
(on screen diagnostic) control both are different than anything we
have ever seen. The power button is large, at about an inch in
diameter. It is very easy to press on initial testing. A
green light is lit around the circle button once the unit is on.
It is not bright at all which helps in not distracting you from the
actual LCD screen.
The controls are designed with ease of
use in mind while retaining a sense of style. Gone are hard
buttons, enter touch sensitive controls. You need to just
lightly touch the area underneath the green commands to activate
them. A faint beep will notify you of a successful touch on
the control panel.
