What happens when you have a really small case and you want both a DVD and CDRW drive? You do not want to get a larger case since that just means more money.  Simplest solution is to get one of the DVD/CDRW combo drives.  Today we will take a look at the SM-332B from Samsung, which is a 32X write, 10X re-write, 40X read and 12X DVD read.

Here are some specs on the unit:

Data Transfer Rate:   Write on CD-Record 32X (4,800 KB/sec)
  Write on CD-Rewrite 10X ( 1,800 KB/sec)
  Read CD Titles 40X (6,000KB/sec)
  Read DVD 12X (21,600KB/sec)

Burst Transfer Rate:   PIO Mode 4 (16.6 MB/sec)
  DMA Mode 2 (16.6 MB/sec)
  Ultra DMA (33.3 MB/sec)

Average Access Time :   CD: 110ms, DVD: 130ms

Recording Capacity:   CD-RW Disc 700/650MB (type 80/74)
  CD-R disc 800/700/650/550MB (Type 90/80/74/63)

Interface:   EIDE/ATAPI

Buffer Memory:   8MB

Drive Mounting:   Horizontal/Vertical

Supported Disc:   DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-Video, CD-ROM
  CD-R,CD-RW,CD-DA, CD-ROM/XA
  Video-CD, Multisession Photo CD
  Extra CD, CD Text

Writing Method:   DAO (Disc At Once)
  TAO (Track At Once)
  SAO (Session At Once)
  Packet Writing (Variable, Fixed Packet)

Physical :   Dimensions (WxHxD mm) : 148.2 x 42 x 184

Weight:   0.77

Using Nero Tools, here are some quick aspects of this combo drive:

As with most Samsung drives, this one boasts a hefty 8MB buffer as well as Just Link, which is a buffer under-run protection technology.
