The SW-224B also incorporates sound dampening technology
like ARS (Acoustic
Noise Reduction System), ABS (Automatic Ball Balancing
System), and DVA (Dynamic Vibration
Absorber). The ARS basically causes a muffler effect to occur
when the CD is spinning at high speed, which dampens noise. The ABS decreases
vibration caused by unbalanced CDs rotating at high speed. The
DVA reduces the vibration of the disk and the loading mechanism
reducing operating noise. Due to these technologies the
SW-224B is one of the quietest drives I have ever used. You
can read more about these technologies here.
To benchmark this drive we burned a 656 meg ISO using NERO
5.5 and Nero CDSpeed. The system specs are as follows: Iwill
KK266R+, 1.4 Ghz Tbrid, Windows 2000, DMA enabled. I will be comparing the Samsung with a Plextor 16X10X32.
|Random Seek Time
As was to be expected the Samsung was faster than the
Plextor. It is interesting to note that the Samsung on the
CDRW test burned faster than the Plextor, where as the previous
Samsung drive the CDRW test was slower.
Samsung has produced yet another quality drive and the
fact that this unit is only $80 makes it one hell of a deal.
Try finding a 24X drive at that price, I'm sure you won't find any
with all these features.
Thanks to Stalin over at Samsung for providing us
this sample unit, take a look at their other consumer products on
