  Test Bed:

  • Athlon Tbird 1.4 GHz
  • Iwill KK266R+ (Via KT133a Chipset)
  • 512 Megs pc166 Cas 2 (2 x 256)
  • Via 4-in-1 4.37
  • Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 2

I will be comparing the Samsung SP8004H (80GB) to the Samsung SP4004H (40GB) and the Maxtor 54098H8 (40 GB).

SiSoft Sandra:

Samsung SP8004H (80GB)

Samsung SP4004H (40GB)

Maxtor 54098H8 (40 GB)

The clear winner here is the Samsung SP8004H (80GB) hard drive, scoring 3427 points over the SiSoft reference.

WinBench 99:

Maxtor 54098H8 (40 GB)

 Samsung SP4004H (40GB)

Samsung SP8004H (80GB)

High-End Disk WinMark 99 (Thousand Bytes/Sec) 16200 13800 20400

Again the Samsung SP8004H (80GB) Hard drive beats out the rest of the competition, turning in some of the highest number between the 3 drives.

HD Tach:

HD Tach Confirms what the other two benchmarks have shown.  The Samsung SP8004H (80GB) is the fastest drive we have tested.  The Samsung SP8004H (80GB) did have a smaller burst rate in our tests than its 40 GB cousin, but it had a much higher average read speed and less dips than its 40 GB cousin.

Operating Temperature:

We used the same setup when we reviewed the Samsung SP4004H (40GB).

Temperatures (Ambient ~26 C)
