Test Bed:

  • Athlon Tbird 1.4 GHz

  • Iwill KK266R+ (Via KT133a Chipset)

  • 512 Megs pc166 Cas 2 (2 x 256)

  • Via 4-in-1 4.37

  • Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 2

I will be comparing the Samsung drive to my Maxtor 54098H8 which is also a 40 gig, ata100, 7200 RPM hard drive, although a bit older, I expect the hard drives to bench about the same.

SiSoft Sandra:

Maxtor

Well, I wasn't expecting this.  At least according to Maxtor's website my hard drive is an ata100 hard drive, but it sure doesn't look like it according to SiSoft.  I think its time to place a "friendly" call to Maxtor and see what's up.

Interesting, the Samsung scores higher in the Business Disk Win Mark, but the Maxtor scores higher in the High-end Disk Winmark.  The Maxtor also pulls off some pretty respectable numbers, at least for something that Sisoft says is operating at ATA66 speeds.

HD Tach:

Maxtor (click able)

This confirms what Sandra said.  The Samsung is indeed a faster drive than the Maxtor, but uses more CPU while reading from the hard drive.  The Samsung generated a smoother line with less dips in speed than the Maxtor.  I repeated this test 3 times with the same results.

Operating Temperature:
For this test I used my trusty RadioShack indoor/outdoor thermometer.  I attached the temp sensor to the underside of the hard drive with sticky tack, and then proceeded to create a load for an hour (by copying over files/folders).
