Upon booting our test rig (IWill KK266/evga GF2MX 32MB), the screen readjusted itself when it reached our Win98 desktop.  No adjustment was needed!  The screen was perfectly aligned horizontally and vertically, great auto feature there.

Our first test was a simple one to see if the EN-5100 could get in and out of StandBy/Suspend mode.  We tried it 5 times and it went in and out of these 2 modes flawlessly.  Our next step was a look at the differences in changing the refresh rates.

Here is a quick reference to the refresh rates recommended for the EN-5100:

Resolution Vertical Freq. Resolution Vertical Freq.
640 X 350 70Hz 800 X 600 60.3Hz
640 X 400 70Hz 800 X 600 72.2Hz
640 X 480 60Hz 800 X 600 75Hz
640 X 480 66.67Hz 832 X 400 74.5Hz
640 X 480 72.8Hz 1024 X 768 60Hz
640 X 480 75Hz 1024 X 768 70Hz
720 X 400 70Hz 1024 X 768 74.92Hz
800 X 600 56.3Hz 1024 X 768 75Hz

The resolution was changed to 640X480, that's when we noticed a slight problem.  At a lower resolution, the windows and icons on our desktop were slightly blurred.  I tried raising the refresh rate and adjusting the contrast, but at the end it was about the same.  The resolution was bumped up to 800X600 which did sharpen the image and finally at 1024X768.  At 1024X768, I noticed what the rave about LCD screens were about.  The picture was superb, all the icons were really sharp.  I compared it to a regular 15" CRT Monitor by KDS, and the images produced by the LCD were a lot richer and brighter.

Next, I loaded up 3DMark2001 by Mad Onion to test out how well the LCD managed fast moving images.  I benched it at 1024X768 setting with everything set at default within the program.  The colors were again displayed vibrantly without a glitch when running through the program.  When viewing the screen at an angle, the color do fade out slightly.  But why would you stare at your unit from an angle anyway.

Overall, I am quite impressed with this value line LCD model from Envision.  Not only is it light coming in at only 9lbs, the colors on this unit are superb.  The price is just right for the consumer just entering into the world of LCDs.

Thanks to Monica over at EPI for providing us with this review sample!  Check out Envision for more quality monitor solutions.

  Pros:
  • Light weight
  • Vivid colors
  • Auto Adjust feature
  • Price just right

  Cons:

  • Can't swivel from left to right
  • No USB port (would have been nice)
