-- Evergreen FireLine 20GB Pocket Hot Drive
-- Price: ~ $180.00 USD

We will be testing this drive on our test rig, which consist of:

  • AMD 1.4 @ 1.5Ghz TB
  • Crucial 128MB PC2100 DDR
  • Epox 8K7A DDR Motherboard
  • SmartView IEEE 1394 Card
  • Windows XP Professional

We do not have a USB 2.0 on this motherboard, so our USB test will default to the 1.1 standard.  The drive will run through some Sisoft Sandra storage tests and WinBench 99.  One thing to note, while running Sandra, it would not complete the drive test.  Either it would crash or hang pretty badly.  Might be a speed issue in regards to our regular USB 1.1 connection.  So most of these benches will be done through the firewire card.

That's the SmartView Firewire card we will be using, it has a total of 3 ports to  use.

One thing I did notice is that the power LED indicator is not too bright.  So you may have a hard time telling if this unit is on or not.  In the above picture, the LED is to the right side.

Here are our Sisoft Benchmark for the Hot Drive using Firewire:

The drive performance ranks nearly as fast as a ata/66 7200rpm drive.  We took the Hot Drive and compared it to our IBM Deskstar ata66 7200rpm hard drive:

Winbench 99 IBM Deskstar Hot Drive
Photoshop 4.0 6240 5977
Premiere 4.2 5500 5100
Sound Forge 4.0 7470 7250
Visual C++ 5.0 9310 9183
Overall 9020 8770

Our next test will be some transfer rate speeds between the IBM HD and the Hot Drive:

IBM to Hot Drive (1 Directory, 4,733 files)

  • 720,621 KB in size
  • 146 Seconds to transfer
  • ~4.9 MB/s

Hot Drive to IBM (1 file)

  • 649,474 KB in size
  • 133 Seconds to transfer
  • ~4.8 MB/s
