We had the chance to try out Evergreen Techs new portable IEEE 1394 (Firewire) and USB 2.0 hot drive. Evergreen has been around for a while, most noticeably the upgrade market. As firewire gets more popular, these portable pocket sized drives should become more appealing to the masses. Today, we're going to put the 20GB version through the test.
Here are some specs on the unit:
- IEEE 1394 FireWire or USB 2.0
- USB 2.0 - 460Mbps
- Firewire - 400Mbps
- Win98SE/2k/XP and Mac 8.6+ supported
- Plug and play, hot swappable
- ~2 LBs
As the biggest selling point of this unit is the speed of the unit utilizing USB or Firewire, we'll find out if this is true or not. Since this drive is hot swappable and supported under most major OS's, this is perfect for the user on the go. There are 20, 30 and 40GB versions of the unit.
Included with the unit is a IEEE 1394 and USB cable. If you do not have firewire or USB 2.0, it can default back to USB 1.1 standards. So its basically a very large version of the USB keychains you have been seeing around the hardware scene. The drive is based on the Oxford 911 chipset, which hopefully can deliver what it promises in speed.
