Here we are at a new installment of heatsink reviewing at GT.  Instead of bombarding everyone with one or two heatsink reviews every few days, we're compiling some of the more popular units into one round up.  We'll call this our 1st Quarter of 2002 round up, makes it easier I assume?

We're going to be testing 7 units from Globalwin, ThermalTake, Evercool, AVC and BitsPower.  There are small ones and large ones, in all different flavors:

We take a look at the Globalwin CAKII-38, ThermalTake Volcano 7 and 7+, Evercool CUD-625 and CUC-610, AVC Tundra and BitsPower NP60C.

For all the testing, we did it using our test rig.  Why bother with the same equipment that may be on its way out the door in terms of speed?  Simple, it provides a controlled setup which is not influenced by any change in hardware.  Here's what our test rig comprises of:

  • IWill KK266 Socket A Motherboard
  • AMD Thunderbird 800Mhz CPU
  • Crucial PC133 CL2 Ram, 128MB

The test will consist of an idle temperature check and a full load temperature check. The full load will be accomplished by using the RC5 program and running 3DMark 2001 for 30 minutes. Arctic Silver II Thermal Paste used without a doubt.  All test were ran with ample time at idle and full speeds to let the thermal paste reach its maximum performance.

All temperatures recorded using our CompuNurse probe and room temperature detected using a Radio Shack digital thermometer.  We'll have temperature marks at the end of the round up.
