3 By now, you must know
about or have heard about stealthing a drive. This is just the
process of hiding the hideously colored optical drive behind a
faceplate. Most people do this to co-ordinate with their case
color. For our project Enlight 7237 case, it has been painted
black so this tiny mod was quite helpful.
What we are trying to do today is to re-route the
status LED of a dvd/cdrw drive to the outside of the case. If
you stealth a drive, the status light is hidden behind the bay
cover. Not useful if you want to see if data is being accessed
or not. We'll show you how to re-route it...
Before beginning, you may want to brush up on how to
remove and install an LED by reading through our
LED Replacement Guide. The replacement guide should give
you some good background information before you begin on this mod.
Here are some tools you may need:
- Soldering Iron + solder
- Wire stripper
- Power drill with drill bits
- Small Philips screwdriver
- Pair of 10" length wires
- 5mm LED
- LED holder
We're going to use our Samsung DVD/CDRW combo
drive for this guide:

You may remember this same drive in the
LED Replacement guide. The LED already installed will be
reused. First thing you will need to do is pop off the front
face plate. Some drives will require that you eject the tray
first, if so, take a paper clip and manually pop it open.

Flip the drive over and there should be
four small screws underneath. Remove these and place them in a
safe area.

Take the back cover off and it should
reveal the internal PCB. Be careful and try not to scratch the
PCB with your screwdriver.

If you look at the front of the drive,
you'll see the existing LED. Your specific model may have a
different sized or shaped bulb, but the process is the same.
