The last benchmark is far from least and in fact is very popular for its diverse tool base from configuration and testing options to bench marking, SiSoft Sandra.

The benchmarks going down relate to the Western Digital 20 Gig, Western Digital 120 Gig, and the Samsumg 160 Gig.

Sandra really provides you with a lot of data when you run one of their benchmarks and because of that I will try to summarize as much as possible.

Item Western Digital 20 Gig Western Digital 120 Gig SE Samsung 160 Gig
Buffered Read 59 MB/s 52 MB/S 58 MB/s
Sequential Read 17 MB/s 41 MB/s 49 MB/s
Random Read 5 MB/s 7 MB/s 8 MB/s
Buffered Write 54 MB/s 44 MB/s 58 MB/s
Sequential Write 17 MB/s 39 MB/s 50 MB/s
Random Write 7 MB/s 15 MB/s 12 MB/s
Average Access Time 8 MB/s 7 MB/s 7 MB/s

Let's go line by line, scoring WD vs Samsung :)

Buffered Read: Western Digital 20 Gig makes a strong showing, WD up by 1.
Sequential Read, the newer hard drives are very fast with Samsung taking this category easily, it's now tied 1-1.
Random Read: This one is a little bit close with Samsung just edging out the Western Digital SE, Score is 1-2 Samsung in the lead.
Random Read: the Samsung is really proving they are the number 1 contender in IDE drives, score 1-3.
Buffered Write: Another close victory for Samsung, they are now leading 1-4.
Sequential Write: Samsung is really strong when it comes to writing to the disk, I am very impressed with its performance, 1-5.
Random Write: The Western Digital finally shows its strength, 2-5. Average Access Time: This is the overall access speed of the drives with the WD 120 Gig and the Samsung tieing. Overall, I will give 1 point to each side for a Samsung victory of 2-6.

Sandra says that Samsung is the best and that makes them 2-0-1 in benchmarks over the two Western Digital drives.
