Upon looking at the drive, you'll notice immediately that it's extremely small.  It measures in only at 64mm(L) x 18mm(W) x 8mm(H).  Just about as long as your finger:

Trek is pushing the idea of having this attached to your key chain, so they've attached a circle loop at the top of the Thumbdrive.

The above picture is of the locking switch on the bottom of the drive.  It lets your write protect your data stored.

The locking clips on the top cap are not really tight enough in my opinion.  It pops off a little too easily, which makes me a bit wary in attaching it to my keys.  Maybe implement a physical lock would help matters in this situation.

I tested out the Thumbdrive on my Dell Laptop and on my custom rig.  Since both were running Windows XP, drivers were not needed to get it working.  After plugging it in for 40 seconds, it installed the necessary software to get it working.  It shows up in your system as a removable drive.  I did notice that the drive size came out to 15.5MB, not 16 as specified on the box.

When the Thumbdrive is on, a tiny LED lights up solid to show it is receiving power.  When data is transferring, it starts to blink on and off.  You can see it in the picture below, sorry for the low quality snap.

I did a quick and simple test with this Thumbdrive against a floppy disk.  I took the same 1.2MB sized file and wrote it to each device.  The Trek Thumbdrive utilizes USB 1.1, so it reads data at 700KB/sec and writes at 300KB/sec.  The Trek Thumbdrive transferred the file in about 8-9 seconds, while the floppy took its sweet time at over 35 seconds.  I did a Sisoft Sandra benchmark just for the kicks:

That's just about right, with the Thumbdrive speeding past the floppies and a tad under the Zips.

I've grown to like this drive a lot, being able to transport files from work to my home computer.  With a reasonable size of storage, most files should have no problems.  I've used it also to transport a few MP3s around, fitting around 2-3 on the drive itself.   If 16MB is not large enough, they have a larger version at 128MB.  Another added bonus, is that this Thumbdrive is bootable as long as your motherboard BIOS supports it!

The only drawback that I encountered is the weak top cap, it comes off way too easily.  I don't attach it to my key chain, but leave it in my bag because of this.

Thanks to Trekstor USA for sending us a sample, it's quite a useful tool for the common joe.

Pros:

  • Small and lightweight
  • A lot larger and quicker than floppies
  • Different sizes to choose from
  • Supported on PC or Mac
  • Bootable

  • Cons:

  • Cap comes off too easily
  • LED is very dim
  • Capacity is only 15.5MBs
