Obtain a LED holder, you will only need one.  These are available at any electronics store like Radio Shack.  They cost only a few cents a pack.

Here is our project Enlight 7237 case:

As mentioned earlier, we want to position our external LED on the left side in this spot:

Connect your power drill with a correctly sized drill bit.  For our 5mm LED and holder, the 1/4" drill bit is a perfect match.  Drill a hole slowly through the case and you should have something like so:

Push the LED holder through the hole first.  The Enlight allows the front bezel to be removed, which made it a easier.

Push the LED through behind the holder and secure your drive:

Check your wires to make sure they aren't caught or snagged anywhere.  If all is well, power up your system and check to see if the lights are operational:

Not too bad for about 30 minutes of work.  Operate your drive as usual and see if the light functions correctly.

To take this guide one step further, many people dislike the idea of stealthing a drive and having to push the eject button behind it.  Feels awkward and cumbersome.  You can do the same thing with the eject button.  It is just a momentary switch hidden behind a button on the outside:

Solder that tiny button out and use the same method of re-routing it outside.  Use a different button or whatnot, there's a good number of possibilities.

Hope you enjoyed this guide, it's a simple one, but quite useful.
