The unit is recommended for all socket 7, socket A, and socket 370 (PGA, FC-PGA) CPU's.
The heatsink differs from the previous model in that each individual pin is ribbed. Labeled as a helicoid pin design, it supposedly increases the pin's surface area 2:1. That's quite a jump in surface area! A total of 188 pins are mounted onto the base, each with its own helicoid design. It is also mentioned that this new design creates micro-turbulence which causes more airflow. Never heard of that one really, but we will see if this unit performs as well as it looks.
Also to note is the screw down clip design used by this heatsink. Unlike most other models where you need to push down hard to get a clip to stay in place, the MCX370-0A utilizes a different method. To fasten the unit down onto your motherboard, you would unscrew the screws. To un-latch the clip, you would tighten the screws. Confused yet? : )
The fan used is a Papst NHH612, which measures in at 60x60x25mm. This 60mm fan blows at about 33 CFM with a rotation speed of nearly 6850 RPM. The noise level is a bit on the high side coming in at 43dB, but if it performs well I'm sure you'll find a way around that.
The fan has 4 long screws which sit on top of 2 grommets (rubber washers) each. I believe it actually reduces the noise level due to vibrations from the high speed fan. I took a look at Swiftech's site and they did mention that this actually has a beneficial effect on temperature dissipation. We tried it last time with out CAK38 from GlobalWin which also has this raised fan design. We didn't notice that much of a performance increase by raising the fan. The fan tail is covered in a cloth material concealing the two wires (12V and Ground) that goes to the molex (4-pin) connectors. I noticed there isn't an extra wire to monitor fan speed. Not a big deal but some people may be interested in knowing it does not provide one.
The bottom of the unit has been worked on quite extensively. There are absolutely no raised bumps or marks on the base. It has a micro-surface finish which is the cause of it's flatness.
